"Thinking about the things that happened, I don't know any other ball player would could have done what Jackie Robinson did. To be able to hit with everybody yelling at him. He had to block all that out, block out everything but this ball that is coming in at a hundred miles an hour and he's got a split second to make up his mind if it's in or out or down or coming at his head, a split second to swing. To do what he did has got to be the most tremendous thing I've ever seen in sports." - Pee Wee Reese
"What a decent human being. How much he helped me. But he refuses to take the credit." - Jackie Robinson
"What a decent human being. How much he helped me. But he refuses to take the credit." - Jackie Robinson
Pee Wee Reese was the shortstop for the Brooklyn Dodgers at the time Jackie was playing. He was the first player to actually befriend Jackie and stick up for him. His actions caused other teammates to stand up for Jackie Robinson which later caused the whole team to take him in as part of the team. At this point, Jackie was known as a valuable player on the team.
