Why We Chose This Topic:
We chose this topic because we already knew a lot about baseball and also about Jackie Robinson. Jackie Robinson was a very talented baseball player and an even better person which made this topic very interesting and also exciting to do. This made us want to do further research on this topic and use this topic as our National History Day Theme. We also chose this topic because we knew it would be easy since we had lots of prior knowledge on him. Choosing Jackie Robinson would also help us by expanding our knowledge on him.
How We Conducted Our Research:
The first thing we did was to research him and get background knowledge on him. We looked online for any useful information we could get about him and then went to the library to get useful books. We used a website to organize our sources to make sure we had them all. The next thing we did was to look up primary sources for Jackie. We found letters and telegrams he wrote and sent to the White House, specifically to Presidents Johnson and Eisenhower. We gathered these sources and got even more books to make sure we weren’t missing any important information. Finally, we interviewed an expert on Jackie Robinson. He gave us a much better understanding of what Jackie did and why he did it.
How We Created and Developed Our Website:
We first used weebly account to get things started. All our ideas of what the site should look like were organized on paper. We added our thesis statement on the home page. there was a great selection of different themes to choose for our site, but we finally chose one. We included many categories, such as home, historical context, interview, connection to theme, etc. Next, we put all of the information under each category, making sure it was specific and clear for a viewer to completely understand. Finally, we published the website.
How Our Project Relates to the Theme:
There are many reasons that explain why our project relates to Rights and Responsibilities in History. First and foremost, it was obvious that African Americans were being treated poorly by the rest of America. They deserved the right to be treated equally, and we believe that it was America’s responsibility to promote these rights. Not only are we referring to government when we say this, but also to the citizens. Sure, government could be okay with African Americans. There would be no positive effect if the citizens continued to maltreat African Americans. It would for the most part be the same country because citizens interact most among themselves, not as much with government. Thus, it was through the people where the most significant, positive change could’ve been made.
